Before Your Massage Appointment

A person receives a massage on their back while lying face down on a massage table, with a massage therapist applying pressure with their hands.
  • Massage relies, quite obviously, on skin-to-skin contact. Make sure to shower prior to your appointments, especially if you are involved in heavy exercise or labor or will otherwise become dirty. Keeping your skin clean will help ensure good therapeutic contact from your massage therapist’s hands. Clean skin will also be better able to absorb the benefits of whichever media your massage therapist uses (i.e. massage/essential oils, creams, lotions).

  • Let us know ahead of your appointment if you have any sensitivities to scents and lotions. Best to avoid an allergic response!

  • Be open about your health conditions, injuries, medications, state of health, and so on. You should expect to have a brief intake conversation before each session in case anything significant has changed since we’ve seen you last. Massage is not the exact same with each session, and that’s good because your body may not be the exact same each time you visit.

  • Arrive 5-10 minutes early for your appointment. Much more than that is unnecessary.

  • Be considerate if you can’t make your scheduled appointment! We get it – things come up, but please don’t “no call, no show”. Our policy at Elementum Massage requests that you give at least 24 hour notice prior to cancelling or rescheduling.

After Your Massage Appointment

  • Drink plenty of water, every day, and maybe a little extra on massage days.

  • Movement and staying active seems to be the only fountain of youth as far as I can tell. Stretch daily and stay active.

  • Listen to your mother! Practice using good posture and body mechanics in your daily life. Consider the ergonomics of your daily routines and look for ways to avoid awkward or uncomfortable repetitive movement.

  • Be aware of your emotional state and mental health. Massage therapy can help with mental clarity and your overall well-being, but it all starts with intention and self-awareness.

As with any type of therapy, it is important to find a good fit with your massage therapist. Honest communication is key! We hope to build a healthy, therapeutic relationship with you and each of our clients.
